A Real Potters Mum

My Uncle Ken died two weeks ago he was in his 80's and worked on farms all his life. Never married no kids or anything. anyway I missed the funeral because I was in China, but I was talking to my Mum yesterday while I was on my way back from our factory in Stoke. She was telling me that they scattered Ken's ashes around some oak trees on the farm were he spent all his working life.
Here's the good bit, my Mum said " I couldn't believe how much ash there was, they were able to put it around 8 big oak trees. I thought Paul could have made a nice glaze with that lot". We both had a good laugh at that. I'm of the opinion that when some one dies you should celebrate their life and remember the good times. moping around and being miserable won't do you any good. Let's face it we all go some time.

I saw a program or news article some time ago about someone making ash glazes from human ashes, as a memorial. Not sure I'd like that much, though.

Totally agree I think a nice Hawthorn Bush is just fine.

I had a potter friend who was asked to glaze a jar with someone's ashes. He did so but after the firing the glaze didn't melt and looked sort of like cement. So he fired it again, and then again. Finally he gave up. I thought that was pretty horrible. I'd rather be scattered around some nice oak trees than be burned up over and over again.

I remember Svend putting someone's ashes in his kiln years ago. He gave the man's wife the ashed pot afterwards. Someone bought one of my jars to put their mother's ashes in a while ago. I felt really honoured by that.

Doug, that is a great compliment. of all the places in the world, they wanted their mothers ashes to sit in one of your pots.
That is the Ultimate in Compliments.
